This past May, after several years of planning and research, Madison Hose Company # 1 placed in service a new rescue boat for use on the Long Island Sound. Marine 1 is a 2013 Metalshark Defiant 29’ craft which formerly served the United States Coast Guard. Significant work was completed on this craft prior to it entering service, including new radios and electronics, and new twin Honda outboard motors.

On Sunday September 25, 2022, members of Madison Hose Company #1 gathered at the docks at West Wharf to christen new Marine 1, which is officially named the “Charles R. Daricek” in honor of Past Chief Charles “Chick” Daricek, who served as Chief of Madison Hose Co. # 1 from 1989 - 1993 and then again from 1995 - 2001.

Chief Daricek was instrumental in the formation of our Marine Division and water rescue operations. Prior to 1994, Madison Hose Company # 1 had been without a dedicated craft for water rescues since the early 1970’s. Recognizing the need for better protection and increased response capabilities on the Long Island Sound, Chief Daricek leased his own boat to the company in 1994 for the sum of $1.00 for the use of emergency responses along Madison’s expansive shoreline.

In recognition of his years of service, the significant contribution to creating a marine division, and his vision for Madison Hose Company # 1, members of the company appropriately chose to name the new Marine 1 after Chief Daricek. We expect that the “Charles R. Daricek” will proudly serve our community for many years to come.
